Argo in the Indian Ocean

Argo home page

Argo will provide 100,000 T/S profiles and reference velocity measurements per year from about 3000 floats distributed over the global oceans at roughly 3-degree spacing.  Floats will cycle to (usually) 2000 m depth every 10 days, with up to a 4-5 year lifetime for individual instruments.

Almost 400 active in the IO by end November 2005

IBPIO

The IOP strongly supports full implementation of the surface drifter array at least at 5° latitude/longitude spacing for SST-calibration, particularly with regard to the area north of the equator where active re-seeding is required to maintain the array due to strong southward wind drift. IOP also noted the lack of monitoring surface currents with drifters as a gap in observing system design that needs to be reconciled.
