Workshops on Extremes Indices

Regional workshops, that are modelled after the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) Indices and Indicators Workshops, are important activities of the ETCCDI and its predecessors. The general goals of the workshops include:

- Derive indices from daily data, especially measures of changes in extremes
- Fill in blank data areas in "global" analysis of climate indices
- Increase confidence in local analyses by placing these analyses in a larger, regional context that includes results from neighbouring stations and countries.
- Increase regional research synergies by sharing insights and improve analyses between neighbouring countries
- Foster greater appreciation for data and data archeology

Specific goals for each workshop include producing a peer-reviewed journal article on analysis of climate change for the giving region, and making available the data and indices in the analysis. In addition to the indepth peer-reviewed regional papers (see Table below), the indices analyzed at the workshops have contributed to a global paper (Alexander, L. V., et al., 2006: Global observed changes in daily climate extremes of temperature and precipitation, JGR, 111, doi:10.1029/2005JD006290) and contributed significantly to the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (AR4 IPCC).

Upcoming Workshops

Greater Horn of Africa workshop on extremes indices to be held on 19-23 April 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya. This workshop is sponsored by the World Bank and is part of a series of three with additional ones on regional modelling and impact assessment. Together these activities form the WMO/World Bank project: Climate Observations and Regional Modelling in Support of Climate Risk Management and Sustainable Development.

Past Workshops

Table: List of regional workshops held over the last decade to promote the monitoring and analysis of extreme climate events, their sponsors and the peer-reviewed publications that resulted from the workshops (taken from Peterson and Manton, 2008).
