Guidelines on Analysis of extremes in a changing climate in support of informed decisions for adaptation.

11th International Meeting on Statistical Climatology - University of Edinburgh, Scotland, 12-16 July 2010

Two papers of interest to the ETCCDI community have been published on the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society:
Monitoring Changes in Climate Extremes: A Tale of International Collaboration and The Myth of the 1970s Global Cooling Scientific Consensus

Joint meeting with ENSEMBLES-WP5.4: 3rd ETCCDI panel meeting, Workshop on Extremes in a Changing Climate Workshop, the ENSEMBLES-WP5.4 progress meeting and a meeting on "Issues of Scaling" held at KNMI, De Bilt, The Netherlands, on 14-16 May 2008. Presentations are available here.

The key question addressed at the joint workshop was how best to assess the probabilities of occurrence of extremes in a changing climate. Its outcome is a (at present draft) WMO Guideline document on this subject which will be available soon.

The report on the "Issues of scaling" meeting gives set of guidelines and suggestions for the modelling and observational communities that will hopefully make comparison easier in future, particularly with a view to the timeline of the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report (AR5).
