WCRP Cross-Cutting Activities

The WCRP launched the Coordinated Observation and Prediction of the Earth System (COPES) Strategic Framework to guide its activities during 2005-2015 with the aim of facilitating analysis and prediction of Earth system variability and change for use in an increasing range of practical applications of direct relevance, benefit and value to society.

COPES Brochure

The COPES Strategic Framework provides the unifying context and agenda for the wide range of climate science coordinated by the WCRP Core Projects: CLIVAR, GEWEX, CliC and SPARC. Specific, cross-cutting activites to be addressed jointly by the WCRP Core Projetcs have been identified by the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee (JSC). The following is the current list of topics:

-Seasonal Prediction
-Monsoons
-Sea-level Rise
-Decadal Prediction
-Climate Extremes
-Anthropogenic Climate Change
-Chemistry and Climate
-International Polar Year

CLIVAR is currently hosting some of the cross-cutting activity websites: Climate Extremes and Decadal Prediction. The CLIVAR Working Group on Seasonal to Interannual Prediction (WGSIP) is responsible for coordinating the WCRP-wide activity on Seasonal Prediction: the Climate-System Historical Forecast Project (CHFP).
